Started a podcast

I don't know why it took the longest to post here on my own blog, but I guess, better late than never. This week, Armine and I, along with a couple friends, started a podcast and it's pretty rad. Anyway, it's about general entertainment discussion and what-not.

Here's the link to the tumblr page - And our twitter

Hope you enjoy.

The sun sets on Aussie land

The final grueling trip to Brisbane. We woke up at 7 this morning to start our drive. More than 10hrs, multiple naps on the van floor, and a number of McDonald's and gas station stops later, we will arrive for our final show in Australia.

We're totally bummed to be leaving this place, but truly excited to be going back home. Matt is meeting his wife in Brisbane, and they'll be staying for an extra few weeks hiking through the Australian countryside. City Of Ships is continuing on with Nuclear Summer for two more shows after this, so don't miss them if you're where they're headed. However, Armine, Dave, and I are headed on a plane home at 6am Saturday. So after the show tonight, we have to say our goodbyes and c'ya laters, and immediately be dropped off at the airport.

It's been a good run outback land. Hopefully it won't be another four years before we get to come back, although, if we got around here more often, it wouldn't be as special as it is.

We had an actual food setup when we got to the venue. Nothing fancy, but it was considerably more than anyone had done for us all tour. It was chips, salsa, pita, cheese, hummus, and veggies.

There was Doritos 'original' which I've never seen before. The standard 'original' flavor for the US is the nacho cheese, but these were simply salted tortilla chips. With the provided salsa, they were delicious.

Andrew went searching in the various couches in the venue and ended finding a total of $13. I'm pretty sure you'd be able to amass that amount from couches in the US if we had regular $1 and $2 coins, cause those are the ones that just fall our of your pockets when you're lounging in a comfy couch.

During clavius, we got bombed by all the dudes on tour.

They jumped on stage right before the kick/bass break. Everyone had a guitar, bass, or drumsticks. It was quite possibly THE most epic last show ever. Felt good to be part of something like that, and I wish this tour wasn't ending.

Alas, we leave our brothers in vandom tonight, and board a plane back home. Almost 40hrs in a plane later, only 12hrs will have passed, and I'll need some fierce sleep.

Signing off till next time. All good things must come to an end.

Melbourne #3 & The killer drives

We got back to Melbourne. Back to the same house we've been staying in. The people are friends of Nathan (from Nuclear Summer), and they've been extremely hospitable. The drive home netted us an awesome shot of Nate and Matt Cook.

Meanwhile, waiting to go to the venue (which was near all day), we had haircut day. Matt Cook dawned his skills as a premiere barber, and cut both Dave and Rob's (drummer from City Of Ships) hair.

Compliments of the captain.

We also had both breakfast and dinner at a restaurant called 'Lentil as Anything' which is a pay-what-you-want vegan buffet. Everything was delicious.
Outside we got another jump shot with Matt Cook.

A close up.

And one of Jackson (guitar player for Nuclear Summer)

During our downtime, the drummers in the pack (Rob from City Of Ships, Nate from Nuclear Summer, Matt Cook, and I) went to 'Drumtek' in town. It's a pretty rad drums-only store with a great selections, great staff, and great prices. Australia apparently, also has a 'drummers union' and drumtek help support that, rad.

We all went to hangout at the shop, but I also had to replace my bottom snare head that I blew in Adelaide. I replaced both heads (cause the top was wearing pretty good too, and I had a spare in my case). Here's a look at both once removed.

The show was a blast. Once again, the Capt. was on sound, so, obviously, everything sounded amazing.

A couple key people came out to hang and see the show. A girl named Mischel came out, who apparently only found out about us right after we had left Australia in 2008. She was super stoked and freaked the hell out during the whole set. Rock on. A friend I made at the last show of the '08 tour, Meg, made it out, and I was stoked to see her. Theron, a friend of Armine's, who used to play in Sorrow's End was present at all our Melbourne shows, so that was awesome. I ended up signing and giving him the busted top snare head I replaced.

After the show, we loaded up directly, and headed straight into a 12hr drive to New Castle. The winds were in high gear again, so part of the trip was again, a bit nerve wracking. We slept at a truck stop, and it was sub-0 temperatures. I left the van once to go to the bathroom, and it was almost impossible to stop shivering. I'm a very cold weather type of dude, but going from a mildly warm van, to subzero temps, and then having to sit on an equally cold toilet seat...that was pretty harsh for 4 in the morning.

The sun came up quickly, but we were all still spent.

We eventually stopped as McDonald's around 9am or so and got some wifi and breakfast, but then we were right on our way again.

The rest of the drive was uneventful till we actually got into New Castle. Once in, we zoomed passed the venue and straight to the beach. We first found a really awesome fish & chip shop, and ate our hearts out. We walked all the way down this long pier and it was beautiful.

Onto the show. It was a long wait for the show to start, and we mostly just fell asleep on whatever we could find, including the floor. I also got some great shots of us preparing for naps.

When the show finally started, it flew by, and when we played, it was fun.

We found a place to sleep tonight instead of directly heading out. It's better for the drivers to sleep, and safer overall. We head out early or Brisbane tomorrow, the last show, stoked and bummed at the same time.

Storming Adelaide

The drive to Adelaide was treacherous and slightly unnerving. I was happy we decided to sleep before we headed out. We only got a few hours sleep prior, it was well worth it, as the length and weather conditions were far from friendly.

There were storm systems looming off in the distance at all times, and we drove through a couple small ones. The wind, however, was the treacherous part. No matter what we did, or where along the path we were, the wind was constantly blowing us back and forth across the road. At some points when the rain and wind fought us together, it was quite nerve wracking.

It had stopped raining by the time we got into town, and surprisingly enough, we were on time for the show. We had a last minute fowl up with a mess in the van though. Matt put his yogurt in a very unfortunate spot, and a sharp right later, Lochlan was covered in it.

None too fun. He cleaned himself off fairly well once we arrived, but he will have to do laundry at the house we stay tonight.

The show was pretty awesome. With Matt Cook on sound again, we sounded great, and I could hear everything. I emphasize this a lot because most sound guys don't know what they're doing, and though they're knowledgable of how the room sounds, they can't mix for s**t for the bands monitors. Capt. Cook knows how we like it, and we love him for it.

The dude we stayed with that night was pure awesome. He first took us to a 24hr bakery. I was extremely excited, as I love meat pies. I don't know why it's not something that's caught on in the US. I got a chicken parm pie, and it was delicious. I also got a giant chocolate doughnut, which was as well.

The house our dude lived in was a place called the 'avenues' of Adelaide. It wasn't the best area, but the house was comfy. He had sleeping bags and mattresses set out for us, then he warmly told us to 'get f**ked, and good night'.

In the morning, the captain comes through again and gets us breakfast. Eggs, hash browns, veggies, and toast. Here's a great picture of Andrew (bassist of City Of Ships) lookin' sexy in his sleeping bag.

We all got our fill of the Internet communications, and we were on our way. We have the day off for the drive to Melbourne, then we play there tomorrow.

Our first stop off for gas was next to a coffee bistro, but it was surrounded by school students. They all looked at us weird as a bunch if grimy dudes jumping out of vans. There was a 2 for $4 deal on coffee, so Matt and I jumped on it. He got a tall black (which is the same as an americano), and I got a cappuccino. I also eyed a pie, and got it too. It was an angus beef, cheese, and bacon pie, and it was glorious.

Back on the road, nothing close to yesterday's weather. It's beautiful today, and no crazy cross winds to scare the crap out if us.

At one stop, we took a sweet mid-air photo with Cook & Nate.

The drive was grueling, but we made it back to Melbourne. Lord of the fries was closed, but we went back to the house, and now we're off to sleepy land.

We play Melbourne tomorrow, but I have to go shopping for a snare head first, good times.

Veggie parm & the Geelong goonbags

On our drive to Melbourne, Matt Cook put on the Ricky Gervaise podcast. It was hard to get into at first, but the more we listened, the stupider and funnier it got. It made me think, when we get home from tour, I want to attempt a podcast with Armine and our friend Jesse. We'll talk about music, movies, comics, news, and all kinds of stupid s**t. I'll try to organize it, we'll see what the response is, and I guess gauge if we should continue on from there. I'd like to do it mostly cause it'll be a fun time sitting and chatting with those dudes.

The show in Melbourne was incredibly fun. Matt Cook was doing sound for the show, and coincidentally, it was the first night I could hear everything on stage. We also got stage dives from the crowd, although pretty much all the stage dived were performed by one dude, we got stage dives none the less.

We stayed at Nate's (the drummer from Nuclear Summer) ex-girlfriends house. The place was super setup. There were beds made up, I was able to take a shower, and even do some laundry.

In the morning we got the wifi password and had an Internet party.

I also found some nice coffee and a French press and went to town. There was some hot chocolate mix stowed in the pantry as well, so Armine was happy.

Dave kept talking about this awesome vegetarian restaurant in Melbourne called 'Lord of the Fries'. We went out to lunch there, and I got the chicken parm burger with fries.

It was delicious. Their menu was amazing, and everything on it was vegetarian.

A woman approached us while we were sitting and asked if we were from Rosetta. I responded by nodding, pointing at me and then to Matt and Armine sitting in the corner. She introduced herself as the editor of 'Heavy' magazine, and then handed us a copy of their last two issues. She then said that her contact information was inside, and we should send her an email to setup an interview. That was pretty cool.

It's about an hour drive to Geelong, so we left a little later due to the fact that we didn't want to spend a whole ton of time before the show there. Driving in, it seems like a nice quaint town.

The venue seems pretty neat. The actual room we're playing in is at the back called, 'the groove room'.

Dave and I went next door to get some coffee. It was good. It seems the less we try to find good coffee, the more sweet coffee places fall into our laps. There was a pretty neat card they had setup on the counter.

Lochlan also showed up with a giant bag of chips (French fries, about $10 worth he said), and they were consumed quickly.

The opening local is a band called 'goonbag colostomy'. A 'goonbag' in Australia apparently is slang for a really cheap silver bag of wine. We first saw one when we met up with City Of Ships in Brisbane. They had heard of it, and went and got one the first day.

Went to a sushi place. It was too expensive for a tour budget, but the prices were unbelievably lower than those in the US. I think I might go for a $2 cheeseburger at McDonalds after the show or something. I just need some food, and all I have left from my supermarket food stores are condiments. Mustard, hummus, peanut butter, and very little jam.

The goonbag colostomy band (as of writing this) have been playing for about 30 minutes, have only played 1 1/2 songs, and as far as I can tell, only two chords.

I said to Matt, "this is how I imagine a goonbag colostomy would feel." he responded, "well, if you're only gonna play one chord, at least they chose a good one." With the exception of the drummer (who has to face this way) not one of them have turned from facing their amps this entire time. In fact, with the exception of the drummer, I don't think any of them have moved an inch since they started playing.

There's one more band on besides them and the touring package. They look to want to use their own drum kit, but that would be a hassle to switch everything around after the current one has already been set and sound checked. We'll see how that goes.

That band (who's name I forget already) ended up positioning themselves in front of our gear. They were only a two piece, so the setup was quick. They were, interesting. It was close to doom when they started out, but then they continued in a direction that I didn't really understand. It wasn't that it was necessarily bad, just certain parts, in my opinion, didn't really fit together. I lost the feeling of fluidity.

On our way back to Melbourne to sleep at the same place we did last night. Stoked about that. I think we're stopping at lord of the fries again before we sleep. I'm stoked about that too.

To cap off the night, here's a picture of Matt Cook with his jacket stylishly inside-out.

...and a blurry picture of Matt with a crate on his head.

8.01.2012

On to the capital.

Dudes.

For breakfast, I had two pb&j sandwiches.

...and for lunch, the oddest combination of hummus, pepperoni, on crumpet. I thought it would be absolutely disgusting, but it was acceptable.

Some beautiful countryside along the way.

We hit up parliament when we got into Canberra.

And the war memorial down the street.

We got to the venue and got some nice curry food. I got fish, chicken, and potato on rice.

The venue is a bit small, and we have to leave room at stage left for people to pass to get to the restroom, but it seems like its gonna be a killer show.

I fell asleep in the backstage and luckily Matt Cook woke me up right before we had to play. When I went downstairs it was indeed packed. I changed into my show clothes quickly and then setup the drums. I couldn't hear my kick drum again, but that seems to be the running thing this tour, I still think we played okay.

Loading out after the show was fun. It hit 0° and we all rushed everything into the vans, and off to our sleep spot. Here's a picture of Lee and Jackson hugging out the cold.

Melbourne tomorrow.
